Browserless MCP in ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to the hosted Browserless MCP server as a custom MCP server plugin, and you sign in with your Browserless account over OAuth. Once it's connected, ChatGPT can scrape, search, crawl, and drive a cloud browser with the Browserless MCP tools.
- A Browserless account for OAuth sign-in
- A ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace on ChatGPT web, with permission to add custom MCP servers
Connect to the hosted server
The hosted server runs at https://mcp.browserless.io/mcp, so there's nothing to install.
ChatGPT adds remote MCP servers as custom plugins. Custom MCP servers are available on ChatGPT web, not mobile, for Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces. On Business, only admins and owners can add them. On Enterprise/Edu, admins can grant other members permission.
- Go to ChatGPT Plugins, click +, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name (for example
Browserless) and a short description. Under Connection, enterhttps://mcp.browserless.io/mcp. - Set authentication to OAuth, review the risk warning, and select I understand and want to continue.
- Select Create as a plugin, review the Browserless tools ChatGPT discovers, and install the plugin. Sign in with your Browserless account when ChatGPT prompts you.
To use it, start a new conversation, type @ in the prompt box, and select Browserless.
To use a region other than US West, add a browserlessUrl query parameter to the server URL, for example https://mcp.browserless.io/mcp?browserlessUrl=https://production-lon.browserless.io. See regional endpoints.
For more on how ChatGPT handles MCP servers, see OpenAI's guide to connecting an MCP server to ChatGPT.
Check the connection
Start a new conversation, type @, and select Browserless. Then ask something like "Use Browserless to fetch the title of example.com" and check that ChatGPT calls a Browserless tool.
FAQ & Troubleshooting
Can I run the Browserless MCP server locally with ChatGPT?
Use the hosted server at https://mcp.browserless.io/mcp unless you need the server to stay private. ChatGPT can't launch a local command itself, but OpenAI's Secure MCP Tunnel can reach one. Complete the tunnel setup in that guide first:
- Create a tunnel in OpenAI Platform tunnel settings and copy its
tunnel_id. Associate the tunnel with your ChatGPT workspace, or it won't appear in ChatGPT. - Set the runtime API key that
tunnel-clientuses, plus yourBROWSERLESS_TOKENfor the Browserless server. - Run
tunnel-client initwith a profile name, your--tunnel-id, and--mcp-command "npx -y @browserless.io/mcp". The guide has the full command. Check the profile withtunnel-client doctor, then starttunnel-client runand keep it running. - In ChatGPT, add the server as above, but choose Tunnel under Connection and select your tunnel.
I don't see the option to add a custom MCP server
Custom MCP servers are only available on ChatGPT web for Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces, so check your plan and use ChatGPT on the web. On Business, only admins and owners can add them. On Enterprise/Edu, ask an admin to grant you the Create plugins with MCPs permission.
ChatGPT doesn't list a tool I expected
ChatGPT reads the tool list when you create the plugin. If the Browserless server has added tools since, open the plugin at ChatGPT Plugins and select Refresh.
